  Casting Auditions

By Ana, Bintu and Michelle

So our number one to play the main character was Michelle and second was Chloe. After shooting the first and second draft of the music with her, we decided to replace her by another actress who was more flexible in terms of time. We shoot the third and the final draft with Manija, 17 who to our benefit, studies drama.

Make-up Tutorial by Michelle Richards

This is our make-up tutorial for Essence Productions. In this video I go, step by step on how I'm applying the make-up and which type of make-up we are using. We used pale foundation to make my skin complexion look lighter than it already is, therefore making my skin look pale and weak. This is because in our music video, I'm the actor who is diagnosed with Illness and therefore we have to show this through the use of make-up and costume in order for our audience to identify this character. We also applied glue on my eyebrows to try to get rid of them as this symbolises the illness of this character.  We used purple eye shadow to make my eyes really look really tired and to show the effects of the illness. For my lips we used pale foundation to make them look really dry showing the illness taking its effect on our character. Through this process it helped us to establish the type of make-up we are going to use for our music video and how this works well. I also think the make-up of an artist or an actor is very important as it helps give them an identity of who they are, and how the audience can relate to them it also adds to the mis-en-scene of our video.

This is our casting list for essence productions. They are all female as our main artist is a female singer therefore our casting had to be all female. This was a much easier process because it was easy to track down many young teenage girls as I have a lot of friends who are my age. From this I thought about females who have had experience drama and singing and would be a very confident person in front of the camera. Most of these females have had some sort of experience which made it very easy to choose and pick out who would best suit. We also did a casting audition which helped the overall decision of who are main artist is going to be due to the fact that we were auditioning them face to face. Therefore it was much clearer to see who stood out immediately from the rest of the auditions. We also wanted someone who was easy to communicate with and wouldn't be a problem for the times we are filming and would be reliable on attending the rehearse shooting as well. Overall we chose Melina Nadmar to be our main artist. This is because we felt she best suited to the type of role we are looking for, she has the star quality of a singer-songwriter and is very confident and able to express her views confidently. She's had very strong experience within drama studying it at GSCE and taking it further to AS&A2. She's also very accessible as she comes to the schedule of our filming.

Logo Designs for Essence Productions by Michelle Richards
This is all the designs I made for the group logo. Our chosen one was the guitar in the white outline as this stood out to us the most. It likes in with our genre and the audience will be able to establish this.

These screenshots show how I managed to design and edit our final logo design. Before using photoshop, I already had the design of the digipak which was just a black circle with the guitar outline and essence productions titling. Therefore I used photoshop to finish off the things I didn't manage to do, making it stand out to our target audience and have a professional image. The first screen shot shows me adding a new layer which was white. Before the background colour was grey and I felt I had to change this as it didn't look attractive for a brand or in representing an artist. I chose the colour white because the guitar outline and font colour was in white, so I felt it was better to go for the white background behind the circle as it matches the circle. I did ask my group and peers about the colours we should use for the background, they said white. But I felt like experimenting to see how the background would look with different colours apart from white. I used blue, red to experiment this and overall it wasn't a good result, therefore white was the colour I decided to stay with. It adds simplicity to the logo, but yet the audience are able to establish the type of genre we are as the colours all associate with our genre. The outlined guitar was a key factor in constructing our logo as I felt I wanted something that would symbolise start away the type of genre we are, without the audience having to listen to our music to configure this. An acoustic guitar is a key instrument for many singer-songwriters and that's why I decided to include this within our logo. The font I used was 'Georgia' which connects with the type of genre we are doing. It establishes the brand as singer-songwriter genre and establishes the artist as well. Overall I am happy with our final logo design as it engages and connects with our target audience.

I created two different story board for our music video before production took place. The narrative structure  of the first story board wasn't  clear to the audience therefore I had to change the storyline and story board. The second story board and music video received a better response because it had a straight forward narrative. The feedback we  received from a small sample also suggests that the second storyboard was a lot structured and thought provoking compared to the first story board.

In order to get a better understanding of the singer songwriter genre. I decided to carry out some research into the codes and conventions of the genre. The research enable me to transfer my knowledge into my music video. some of the convention of the singer songwriter  genre is  demonstrated in my music video.

Target Audience
I created a mood board for our ideal target audience.  certain images on mood board could suggest the type of target audience we wanted our music video to attract. A mood-board was an affective way of focusing our attention to the type of target audience we wanted for our video.
